LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE MASSAGE
The lymph moves through the body in its own vessels from the interstitial spaces to the subclavian veins in the neck. The lymphatic fluid is NOT pumped by the heart, its upward movement depends on the motions of the muscles and joints to move the fluid or indeed from the help of a skilled therapist manually stimulate the drainage process.
A manual lymph drainage starts with a light massage on the surface of the skin of the neck. The therapist gently rubs, strokes, taps or pushes the skin in directions that follow the structure of the lymphatic system so that accumulated lymph fluid can drain through proper channels. Lymphatic drainage is very gentle and not at all painful. Each session lasts from 45 to 60 minutes. For greater results in detoxification and fluid drainage, therapy usually is performed once a day four or five times a week for two to four weeks. Usually the greatest reduction in fluid retention occurs in the first week of treatment and stabilizes during the second week, however the detoxification of waste and circulation improvement continues with further sessions. During the course of your treatment, you will be fully advised on some nutritional tips to help you cleanse your system, including (needless to mention) increasing your water intake to substantial levels to optimise the detoxification process.
At Integrated Physio your treatment will always be subject to an overview of your health, placing emphasis also on your mental and emotional state. We will encourage you, whilst undergoing a detox programme, to bring your attention to detoxify your mind from over stimulation derived from the addictive screens and social media, over thinking and anxiety. We have achieved great results by combining lymphatic drainage with Traditional Chinese Acupuncture, offering a more comprehensive treatment.
